"What was her mom thinking pushing her to get dressed up and put makeup on?  If she loved Abby for who she was maybe they could avoid the whole thing."

    Perhaps her mom was encouraging her to fit into society's sterotypical ideal of what a high school girl should look like. Yes, I agree that the mother might be better off if she supported or helped her daughter's self-esteem more by reinforcing that what is inside that counts.
